The Syrup Incident

We had been noticing that our fridge door was not latching properly...but didn't really pay too much attention to it because we were always able to get it to shut tightly with a little extra push. Well...apparently we didn't push hard enough before we pulled out of Landa.

As we were leaving on the very bumpy and hilly road out of the campground, I looked back in horror to see the fridge door swinging freely and several items were being catapaulted out onto the floor. All of this was happening in slow motion of course as I was envisioning the mess that was about to happen before my very eyes.

We had just purchased a brand new container of pure maple syrup at Costco the day before. This bottle is made from plastic...perfect for an RV lifestyle! It won't break if it falls on the ground...right? Wrong.

It must have hit the top of the container just perfectly and it cracked off and dumped it's entire contents of onto our kitchen floor WHILE we were moving. Matt got the RV stopped. And luckily, Angie was riding in there with us at the time and she was able to help Matt clean it up (Lucy was sleeping on my back). There was also a container of maple yogurt that opened and splashed on every surface. What a horrible sticky mess! It was everywhere. We were able to stop most of it before it went under the slide out, which was good.

We've had SO MANY things happen like this...glasses breaking, water containers exploding, etc. But I think this one takes the cake for messiest road disaster so far. Good times.

oh
wow
!!!!

At first I was wondering...how did Lucy gnaw the top off of that thing with only 3 teeth?! LOL

I weep for all the mapley goodness that is lost. But yay for not going under the slide out!

Bet you're so glad that you don't have carpet on your floor!

That is a perfect hit on the bottle!
I agree with Barb, thankfully you have wood floors, I can't imagine trying to get that out of the carpet in our trailer. YUCK!

Ugh. Of all the things to break!!

Happy trails!

This almost makes me cry! Pure maple syrup is $28.00 a pint here, we would have used pancakes and sopped it off the floor! Just the saddest thing in the world to lose, of course not to mention the sticky mess :)

Ouch... this brings back memories of my sister throwing ice creams (yes, it happened multiple times until the ban was put in place) at my mom while driving down the road.

Oh. My....

Well, it's times like these that make us greatful for all the smooth roads! ;) Sorry about your sticky mess and waste. It could always be worse. ;) You could have been stuck couch bound since you ripped your ligaments in your left foot and watched your children put pouring their dirty dishes in the dishwasher full of clean dishes like I did today...*sigh* I can't wait until my foot heals...

My parents experienced a similar issue in their RV only they tow theirs behind so they didn't notice until 700 miles later that the cooking oil, pancake mix and spaghetti noodles came out of the cupboard, crashed to the floor and the oil mixed with all of it making quite a mess. Not fun!!! Needless to say they traded that RV not too long after!

whoa, and I thought Desitin was as bad as it could get......good luck! I bet you will be finding "sweet spots" for days! lol

well that answers one of my questions that I posted in your guest book. Now I know we're not the only ones who get road scramble surprise now and then. Good that you caught it before the slide out got it.

oooh stickiness will be found in little spots forever. ;) good you caught it quickly.

ouch. and i thought oatmeal all over the kitchen was bad.

my 5-yr old would have been right behind licking all that gooey goodness.

March 15, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterflo

That must have been fun. Did Matt bust out the simple green to clean it up. Hee hee . Hope all is well.

Been there...once with a pot of chili, once with a dozen eggs! But our messes were before slide outs - that WOULD be a mess! And syrup? yech!
Safe travels....

That looks like a nice case of Murphy's Law...as far as syrup can relate to Murphy's Law!! Here's hoping for less bumpy roads & sturdier bottles of syrup.

Be well...

A few years back on my first day of a 5 week long RV trip I started feeling something on my head... I felt my hair and felt something sticky. It did not take very long to realize that there was a container of syrup tipped over in the overhead compartment spilling on me. Unfortunately for us our driver did not stop! I attempted to wash my hair in the sink and was pretty miserable feeling for the rest of the day until we got to where we were staying for the night!

I have a syrup bottle that looks just like that... and had a mess once that looked like yours too... but on my kitchen floor! Turns out syrup bottles are a little tricky to balance on your hand when you're 4 years old! ;-)

Maybe you could get those plastic kid locks at like babies r us to hold the fridge and cabinets closed during bumpy roads, just a thought, they don't always keep kids out but maybe it will keep food/dishes etc in! :)

At any point did Matt say "if you can take pictures you can help me clean this up" LOL

March 24, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

Melissa...LOL, actually I had Lucy sleeping on my back and couldn't really bend down very well. Our friend Angie was in the RV when it happened and she graciously helped him clean it up. :)
